YOUTH programs

Youth Action Movement

YAM (The Youth Action Movement) has been working with Crown Heights teenagers for over 11 years. The staff and volunteers at YAM form a team that is committed to making a difference in the lives of teens and families in Crown Heights, the Rebbe’s shechuna.

Our mission is to provide support, enrichment, and guidance to Crown Heights’ teens.

“It has long been stated that the frum community needs to do preventive outreach within its own camp. I daily pray for the spiritual and physical welfare of my children. So many times, and in so many ways, YAM has been G-d’s answer to my prayers. I can attest personally to the fact that YAM tries and succeeds in preventing the loss of many Jewish souls. Thank you, and may G-d bless you with all good.”

Evening Programs

YAM offers teens evening programs that are interesting, fun, and educational. We host a Thursday night Beis Medrash, special farbrengens, shiurim, Shabbos and holiday meals, Sunday basketball trips, and more. We also provide interesting creative outlets like the famous YAM JAM. YAM staff and volunteers are also available to spend one-on-one time with youth by appointment.

Programs take place in the Shalom Center and other locations in Crown Heights. For more information, call Yitzchok Smith at (347) 439-6336 or Yosef Kanofsky at (917) 753-9117.

GED (General Equivalency Diploma)

Twice a week, older teens and young adults have the opportunity to prepare for the GED exam in an open, study group environment. Each student is given guidance to best focus on the areas that he needs to work on. Special attention is given to each student according to his learning style. Scores of teens has successfully passed the GED exam through our program. For more information, call Zvi Lipchik at (917) 743-2268. The class has open admission and is free of charge. Classes are Tuesday and Thursday from 7:15—9:30 in the CHJCC conference room at 392 Kingston Ave.

Girls’ Mentoring Program

Our mentoring program matches teens with young adult volunteers who form a positive and healthy relationship with them. Our volunteers are good role models who offer the support and friendship that allows teens to build their self-confidence. Teens can turn to them for guidance and advice in getting through the difficulties of growing up. The mentoring program is school-based with a focus on younger teens, ages 12-14. For more information, call Hindy Morosov at 718 771 9000 x13.

N.O.T. (Not on Tobacco)

Yam offers a smoking cessation/reduction program that helps teens to quit smoking or drastically reduce the amount they smoke. The program is a 8-week discussion course filled with interesting and informative information addressing the underlying reasons why people smoke, important facts about how smoking affects one’s health, and alternatives to smoking. For more information, contact Yitzchok Smith at (347) 439-6336.

Summer Program

Every summer, we run an 8-week, full-day program for teens. The summer program features morning study groups, work internships during the day, and evening and weekend activities. The positive experiences and personal development achieved during the summer remain with our teens throughout the whole year. For more information, call Yitzchok Smith at (347) 439-6336 or Yosef Kanofsky at (917) 753-9117.

We provide a listening ear and practical advice to parents who want extra resources and help guiding their teenagers through adolescence. Our aim is to help parents improve communication and develop a more healthy and productive relationship with their children. For an appointment, contact Yosef Kanofsky at (917) 753-9117.
